Medical Office Assistant

medpro.jpgDorson Vocational Technical Institute is pleased to offer Medical Office Assistant training to students who are interested in a rewarding and fast paced career in the Allied Health/Professional Health Care industry. Medical Office Assistants support physicians and nurses in delivering patient care. Administrative assistance tasks consist of keeping medical records, greeting patients, billing and clerical duties, scheduling appointments, arranging for admission to the hospital and laboratory services, and checking supplies. A medical administrative assistant may also be required to perform certain clinical tasks including: documenting vital signs (e.g. blood pressures, pulse, respirations, and temperature), performing simple lab tests, preparing patients for examination, arranging equipment and instruments before an exam, assisting physicians during patient exams, explaining treatment, medications, diet schedules, and procedures to the patient.

Program Outcome

The Medical Office Assistant Program prepares a graduate to work as an entry-level Medical Front Office Assistant, medical office receptionist, insurance biller/collector, appointment scheduler, or medical office records clerk in healthcare centers, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory care centers, and medical billing offices. Students will concentrate on medical terminology, medical ethics and OSHA regulations, computer skills/training, medical records management, patient charting, billing practices and insurance filing procedures; while learning a variety of medical and dental office administration procedures.


    • Students interested in these fields should possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
